About us
Central Otago Wilding Conifer Control Group (CWG) was established in 2013 as a response to the growing concerns about the encroachment of pines on Central landscapes of significant importance.
Our driving agenda is to protect our unique landscape and hold onto everything that’s golden. Our tussock hillsides, desert features and dryland biodiversity.
Collaboration is the key to controlling wilding pines. We work with national agencies, local government and landowners to reclaim land from wilding pine infestations.
This involves:
-
Survey and scouting the problematic area
-
Coming up with a suitable control strategy for the infestation
-
Negotiating funding contributions for the project
-
Sourcing contractors to carry out the control work
-
Documentation
-
Maintenance follow ups
-
Guidance and support throughout the project

Much of our funding comes from the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme which is overseen by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI).

Local government such as the Central Otago District Council and Otago Regional Council contribute towards the operations of CWG.

But supportive Landowners are critical to our work.

We have the vision to protect Central Otago landscapes from being overthrown by self-seeded pines, but we often need their permission and enthusiasm to achieve this.
